After another week of traveling and meeting lots of industry professionals, I reflected on the amount of people that have strong opinions on the state of their company, its strategy and its prospects. It seems to me that many people in traditional companies are not aligned with the company purpose and this leads to lots of misalignment. So many people in companies are pulling in different directions, undoing each other’s efforts and fighting against established processes, architectures, business models, ways of working and organizational structures. The amount of waste in large organizations is, in my experience, staggeringly high. There are mechanisms to increase alignment, such as a hierarchical organization where the highest manager sets direction and forces others to follow. In Sweden, meetings, sometimes endless meetings, to reach consensus are a mechanism to increase alignment. But one of the most powerful mechanisms is to establish and engage on a clear purpose that everyone on the organization either subscribes to or decides to leave as it doesn’t match their own purpose. So, as you’re coming out of the Easter break, ask yourself whether your purpose and that of your company are aligned with each other. And if not, what are you going to do about it?
