We tend to think that we know what we want and this tends to be driven by the idea of freedom from worries, freedom from constraints, freedom to go where we want, freedom to be with who we want. So, I am always fascinated by people who got the opposite of what they wanted and consider this a transformative and highly beneficial experience. The typical example is people that spend time in prison. For instance, Rick James, the American musician, claims that going to prison was the greatest thing that happened to him. There is a saying that states that sometimes not getting what you want is the best thing that could have happened to you. So, next time you don’t get what you want, turn it around and ask yourself what the benefits are of NOT getting it. If nothing else, it often opens up doors that would have closed otherwise.
