It is interesting to observe that everyone seems to know what they want, but very few have a clear understanding of what they need. Our wants are often concerned with things and reputation, for instance a cool car, a big house in a desirable location, a successful spouse, a promotion or receiving awards. But our lives are improved by meeting our needs rather than our wants. We need safety, we need to feel loved by our close ones, we need to feel part of a community, and so on. There is a well known story about the guy buying a quarter inch drill. When asked why he needs it, the answer is that he needs quarter inch holes in the wall. When asked why needs the holes in the wall, the answer is that he wants to install a bookshelf. In response to the question why he needs a bookshelf, the obvious answer is that his books are currently sitting on the ground. Finally, when asked why his books can’t stay on the floor, the answer is that his wife is annoyed by the books on the ground and he wants to be loved by her and give her what she wants as it is important for her. Next time you notice that you want something, think about what need you are seeking to meet and whether this is the best way to accomplish it.
