Time to change your paradigm?

The term “paradigm” was popularized in the 1962 book on scientific revolutions by Thomas Kuhn. The idea is that a research community operates based on a paradigm and that a revolution basically means replacing one paradigm with another. Paradigms are so powerful as they provide the lens through which we view the world. We ignore well over 99% of all information that reaches us and the paradigm determines what comes through and what doesn’t. Of course, we do not only use paradigms in research, but also in society at large. And the last 70+ years in the west, we lived in a paradigm where the US offered military protection and financial stability to our economies. That paradigm is disappearing and we have to move to a new one. One where Europe has to hold up its own pants and act independent of the US. That comes with a lot of fear, uncertainty and doubt, as we can all read about the media. However, the same principle applies to our own lives: we operate based on a paradigm that may or may not be outdated. So, ask yourself whether it is time to change your paradigm?
