The three horizons model by McKinsey claims that companies should spend 10% of their resources to explore new business opportunities. The other 90% should go to the established business (70%) and proven, emerging businesses (20%). In my view, as individuals we do best when we grow and develop. That means trying out new things, i.e. experimenting. As children we automatically do this as almost everything we do is new. When we grow older, it is increasingly easy to stay in our comfort zone and keep doing the things we always do. Therefore, we need to intentionally identify new things to try out in order to make sure we don’t get stuck in a rut. The problem is that many of the new things we try will not be fun and it will feel very inefficient to experiment. We need to be conscious of that and despite the perceived inefficiency keep experimenting as the value is in the experimentation itself. So, what experiment are you running today!
