Adjusting to the new normal …

When I was at a conference last week, I rented an apartment to stay at. It turned out to be one “with character” and far from comfortable to stay in. It was built in the attic of a house, so it was slanted roofs everywhere, the shower stall was incredibly small and annoying to use, the bed was uncomfortable and whoever designed the pillow deserved to be shot. The first day, I was shuffling through the place, trying to figure out how to spend the few hours I had there. Interestingly, by the third day, I had accustomed myself to the place. I knew where to duck to not bonk my head into the ceiling, I had figured out a way to shower comfortably and I slept like a puppy. The Swedes, bless their souls, have a saying that says “gilla läget”, meaning that even if things suck, you simply force yourself to like it and before you know it it grows on you. So, next time, you run into a situation that sucks and that you can’t change, simply “gilla läget” and give it a few days. You’ll adjust to the new normal before you know it!
