More than a decade ago, a book with the title “Filter Bubble” was published. The point of the book was that the social media companies make money relative to the amount of time you spend on their site and the best way to keep you around is to show content to you that you agree with. This has led to a situation that most of us hardly ever watch or read things created by people that we disagree with. In some ways, this is nothing new as the major political groups in most societies had their own outlets in the form of newspapers, magazines and TV channels. However, it seems to me that the amount of interaction between the various groups is less than ever and many of us are never seeing anything that is not in our bubble. Over the last years, I have started to intentionally seek out other content to read and watch that I disagree with. Not because these people are necessarily convincing me, but as a mechanism to better understand what other people think and how they reason. I realized that we don’t disagree on the outcome that we are looking to accomplish, but rather on the best way to get there. Although there is evil in the world, the vast majority of people simply want the best for their loved ones and are looking to make the world a better place. They are not the enemy.
