As I keep adding to the number of times I have traveled around the sun, I realize that it is easy to fall into the trap of past achievements. And it’s not just me. In the gym that I frequent, I often hear retired men talk about their past achievements when they were working. At conferences, the grey haired people talk about the good old days. The fact is that nobody cares about what you have done in the past. I recently read that whatever role you had carries you three years and then doesn’t help you anymore. You are only as good as your latest project. In some ways it is even worse: when an industry and society is in rapid transformation, experience and the things you did in the past can actually be a disadvantage as you may pull out the old playbook even though it doesn’t work anymore. So, I sometimes need to remind myself that rather than reveling in past accomplishments, I have to move on and focus on the next big thing I want to accomplish.
