The limits of human intellect …

One of the realizations I had recently is how much in the modern western world is designed around the limitations of the human intellect or information processing capability. The way we use the traffic lights in traffic. The boundaries on larger roads between the two streams of traffic. The way we create maps to find our ways around. The way computers and phones organize their user interface. The way companies organize themselves into functions. The steps, structures and roles that are inserted in business processes. All these things are organized not because the world needs it but because humans have cognitive limitations and we would cause accidents or not be able to get anything done without these “crutches”. Did you think of the fact that once we have self-driving cars we won’t need traffic lights anymore? The cars could negotiate with each other in what order to cross a street. Or that an AI agent doesn’t need your business process because it can do everything in one step because it has very large memory and a pretty large buffer for context. So, one of the questions that I have been asking myself recently is what I am doing to limit myself and what I can accomplish by not getting out of the way of the tools that I have surrounded myself with?
