I spoke at a conference recently and basically announced that the profession of many of the people in the conference was going out of style rapidly and that most of the work was going to be replaced by automated solutions. The interesting response from most was either disbelief or a statement along the lines of “I am really good at what I do” as if that would be reason to not be displaced by technology. There are many professional roles that have disappeared because of technology. Just asking ChatGPT gives me examples such as human computers, switchboard operators, lift operators, travel agents, lamp lighters and so on. As we are entering the next phase of AI-driven automation, many roles will either disappear or employ much fewer individuals than earlier. It is not the job of your employer to keep you employed, but rather your job to make sure that you are employable. And sometimes this means changing from your current profession to another one. So, my question today is whether you being good at what you do will protect you from disruption?
