One of the insights that I still have struggle with internalizing is that psychology research pretty indisputably shows that we are irrational beings that post-rationalize our behavior. One of the most illustrative experiments is people where both brain halves have separated due to epileptic seizures. These people were shown actions to take only to their left eye, which connects to the right brain half, such as opening a window in the room that they were in. When taking the action and then asked why they did this, the left brain half, responsible for words and speech, concocted a story about why they had just opened the window which had nothing to do with reality. Also, fMRI scans and other research methods show that humans, when confronted with a decision, make the decision first and then generate an explanation for why we took the decision. We care more about minimizing cognitive dissonance than about reality. As long as it makes sense, we are fine with the explanation. So, I frequently remind myself that even though I feel like a rational person that occasionally fights with my emotions, the reality is that I am irrational and that I post-rationalize my decisions. Maybe you would benefit from that reflection too?
