Are you playing a finite game?

There is a concept in game theory which distinguishes between finite and infinite games. A finite game is like a football match. It’s clear who the players are, what the rules, what winning looks like and when it ends. Infinite games are different in that players enter and leave the game constantly. The rules change all the time. You can’t win as it is continuous. And, as the name suggests, there is no end. You can’t win in business. You can’t win in life. You can’t win in your relationships. The only thing you can do is to keep playing. My experience is that in work and in business, many are bringing a finite game mindset to what really is an infinite game. You want a continuous and long term relationship with your customers. You need competitors that challenge you to play your best game. You need partners that compensate for your limitations and weaknesses. Damaging all those relationships because of the next project deadline, the next quarterly results or the next product release is simply hurting your ability to play the game going forward. You are not beating them, but rather hurting yourself. So, be clear what game you’re playing and bring the right rule book.
