With Agentic AI bringing the next phase of automation in companies, I believe that we’re going to see an even stronger bifurcation of work. Most companies are and will be run by “the algorithm”, a layer of automation and AI agents that embody the key value delivery processes for the company. Humans will either work for the algorithm or they will work on the algorithm. Working for the algorithm is like the Uber driver who gets told where to pick up a rider, where to bring them and what route to take. Or the warehouse worker whose every movement is tracked to maximize efficiency. But it can also be much more subtle like automatically generated emails that tell you to do certain things. The other group is people that work on the algorithm. Their job is to further improve the efficiency, resilience and results delivered by the company. The problem with the former group is that you’ll be replaced the moment we figure out how to automate your role. The challenge of the latter group is that you need to stay on top of technological development to make sure that you are moving things forward. What group are you in? And if you’re working on the algorithm, what are you doing to stay there?
