When you’re healthy …

There is a saying in many cultures: When you’re healthy, you want a million things. When you’re ill, you only want one thing. As I get a bit less young, I notice that lots of people around me as well as I are starting to struggle with things that we took for granted when we were young. As one example: I have been working on recovering from a running injury for the better part of a year after running a marathon last year. None of us can categorically avoid getting ill, but we can shift the bell curve in our favor, reducing our chances of getting ill. And, funnily enough, there is one thing that is by far the most effective of any medical treatments and that gets confirmed time and again by research. It’s not a pill. It’s not some kind of miracle treatment. It’s plain and simple exercise. A solid combination of cardio and strength training apparently is the most effective mechanism of extending our health span. Most of us rather get a pill from the doctor and avoid the gym, but that’s not how our bodies work. So, did I miss you in the gym this morning? I was there!
