So you want more?

We are all wired to want more. More money. More recognition. Larger boat. Bigger house. More expensive car. I get it. Part of me wants that too. Once you get around the sun a few times, you start to realize that every time you set a goal, you are basically making a contract with yourself to be unhappy until you attain it. However, we are getting cheated because the sense of happiness, satisfaction and fulfillment is temporary. Our nature is such that everything we accomplish results in a temporary buff in our happiness that soon dissipates again and leaves us wanting for more. The hedonic treadmill. As many of the age-old religions explain to us, our happiness level is calculated as what we have divided by the things we want. The more we want, the less happy we’ll be. The key to feeling happy, satisfied and fulfilled is not to want and strive for more, but to want less. And to be grateful for what we have.
