One of the important lessons in Buddhist meditation (or secular meditation for that matter) is that you are not your thoughts. When deep in meditation, you can see thoughts appear in your head like clouds in the sky, watch them fly by and then disappear over the horizon. Where these thoughts come from and where they go is, at least to me, a mystery. However, we should not underestimate the power of thoughts in our regular lives. Neuroscience research shows that we become what we think. Or rather, we stay who we are because we think the same thoughts, day after day. Thoughts that reinforce what we think of as our identity. Thoughts that explain why certain changes are impossible. These thoughts are extremely persuasive and it is very easy to identify with these thoughts. Not only that, there are real physiological reactions in the body in response to our thoughts that affect our behavior. So, my reminder to myself and you today is to be careful what you think! Think the thoughts of the person you want to become.
