Humans are social animals

Over the last weeks, suddenly posts are popping up on LinkedIn and other channels about people enjoying being back in the office and reflecting on the isolation and loneliness of working from home. Although I am not as active in returning to office as many, not the least because the people I work with on a regular basis are not there anyway, I do see where these posts are coming from. As I write this, I just finished a 2 day offsite with my Software Center team and I realize that we are all social animals. We need to be in the same physical space, read each others non-verbal communication and have time for chats that are not about work but about everything that makes us human. I have noticed that for many, the lack of contact with colleagues caused a situation where the job and role description are all that we do and nothing else. However, companies need unsanctioned, unscheduled, random and serendipitous connections and initiatives that often lead to the innovations that everyone wants to see. That’s not happening in the weekly Teams or Zoom meeting, I think.
