For most of my career, the role of software has been growing across industry and society. The number of software engineers has only grown and the opportunities for anyone with even moderate programming skills have been quite amazing. During those years, many industries, processes, jobs and roles have been affected, changed or even removed due to software. Many people were hit by disruption and transformation, but most people in the software industry were unaffected and instead got more opportunities. And most of us software people were not particularly understanding of the challenges that those being disrupted were experiencing. Now, with Agentic AI and the incredibly rapid pace of improvement of models that can generate code, for the first time us in software are affected and even if I think that there will be plenty of opportunity, the jobs of many software engineers will change quite significantly. The reflection that I had is that it’s nice with all the talk about disruption and transformation. But when it affects you and what you do, it quickly becomes pretty scary. This one affects all of us software people that perhaps were not affected before.
