Meetings used to be the bane of my existence, even if I regularly was the reason for the meetings being as I asked for them to get my team aligned. And don’t even get me started on all-hands sessions. Yes, they feel good if you’re the boss to force so many people to stop doing productive work and instead spend their time on you. But very often little work is done during meetings and many could have been replaced by other coordination mechanisms. One of the things I have been incredibly interested in are the ways of working at the Musk companies. I know that many frown on me mentioning even his name due to his current role in US politics, but the fact remains that the man has built some incredible companies and has taken on huge incumbents and overcome terrible odds. Not once. Not twice. But time and again. And one of the rules in his companies is that it is your obligation to leave a meeting if you are not contributing anything nor learning anything. Just sitting there fiddling your thumbs is simply a waste and should be avoided at all cost. I think that this is a very healthy principle, so my question to you today is: walk out of any meetings recently? And if not, why didn’t you?
