Dereck Sivers, the founder of CD Baby, author and generally what seems to be a fun person who knows how to enjoy life has a rule that says “hell yes or no”. He feels he has so many opportunities coming his way that he has to be incredibly selective in what he says yes to. So, his rule is that the default is “no” unless it’s a strong “hell yes”. Although I don’t want to disagree with successful people like Dereck, I have noticed that most of the opportunities that we are offered in life tend to be more of the same. Another talk, another collaboration, another job of the same ilk, etc. And I do agree that we need to be very careful in what we should say yes to when it comes to those. However, there is a much smaller stream, more of a trickle, of opportunities that come out of left field. That might feel awkward, a bit scary and yet intriguing. The things that would require us to get out of our comfort zone. The offers that make us gravitate towards saying no as a kneejerk reaction, but that would shut us off from the opportunity to experience something else. To enrich us and to let us learn things about ourselves we never knew. Those opportunities we should say yes to. There it’s “damn the torpedos; full force ahead”. So, my challenge to myself and to you today is: what out-of-left-field opportunity did you get and what is your answer?
