During the last years, I’ve been in several situations where a senior person was brought in to take on a certain role and address an issue in the company or organization. This can be developing certain skills in the organization, develop a business ecosystem or setting up a sales organization. In all these cases, the individuals based themselves on their experience and, in practice, pulled out a playbook that they had successfully applied in the past. Although experience is a wonderful thing, there is always a risk that the context in which it was successful is different in a material way, causing the playbook and associated material to not be relevant or at least not applicable without significant adjustment. Especially as I get older, I realize that I easily fall into the trap of replaying old playbooks and getting surprised when they don’t work. So, I am trying to be more conscious of the limitations of my previous experiences and the differences between earlier contexts and the current one. So, my question to you today is: does your playbook still work or do you need to update it?
