How do you sell?

For some reason, many people that I meet frown upon the terms “sales” and “selling”. I guess it is the image of a sleazy used car salesman that comes to mind and nobody wants to be a lying, cheating a-hole who looks to trick everyone they get in touch with. Still, everyone is in sales. If you are trying to convince your colleagues of a course of action: sales. If you are talking to your boss about a project to pursue: sales. Whenever I write and look to publish a research article: sales. Even me writing this piece of text trying to convince you that everything is sales is also sales! We are all sales people and we all have things to sell. In the end, sales is about convincing some to a course of action that they may not have taken without us. We even sell things to ourselves. Just reflect on your internal dialog when you are trying to decide on two choices. Being aware of the fact that you are selling often leads to a better outcome as you focus more on understanding the person at the other side, empathy, and what arguments they might be susceptible to. So, as a reflection for today: how do you sell? And is there room for improvement?
