According to Jordan Petersson, in human tribes during the hunter-gatherer age, only men in the top half of the hierarchy would have children. Women would intentionally select higher status men to help their offspring have the best conditions to thrive. This means that we are all the progeny of the most competitive people and this prevalence for competition has been honed for generations. This leads to all of us being quite competitive. The challenge is that in modern society, the number of hierarchies to compete in is virtually infinite. Anything from the highest ranked boss in the company to breeding the best looking dog and from running the fastest marathon to lifting the heaviest in the gym, we can compete in anything we can see and imagine. If we’re not careful, we fritter away our lives engaging in competition after competition trying to outperform everyone we meet. I believe that we need to be incredibly careful in choosing the hierarchies we compete in and should ignore almost everything else. So, my question to you today is: what do you compete in?
