I have a challenge to you: predict the level the S&P 500 will close at next week Friday. Then predict the temperature at midnight that day and whether it will rain or not. Finally, predict what president Trump will share in his social media feed that day. We live in a world where we have done everything we could to make our lives as predictable as possible. Our houses keep us dry and warm. The local supermarket has all the food we need and want. Our cars are incredibly reliable and seldomly break down. Our paychecks come in reliably on the 25th of every month. The consequence of this is that every disruption to these patterns comes as a humongous and unwelcome surprise and we feel personally insulted when the heating fails, the supermarket is out of some foods, our car breaks down or when our employer fires us or goes bankrupt. But the fact is that life is fundamentally unpredictable and rather than assuming that today is like yesterday and tomorrow is like today, we need to anticipate and embrace unexpected developments and change. It will make us much more resilient, more accepting of change and willing to let go of things that no longer help us in our lives.
