Whenever I read about a highly respected senior business leader or politician announcing that they are leaving their position, I always wonder what the process was that led up to that pivotal point in their lives. Many of us are forced out of situations where we have established ourselves, such as retirement, getting fired or running into health concerns. However, there are many times where we have a choice about continuing along the path that we’re on or to quit. Of course, it is always easier to continue on the path that you’re on. For instance, stay in the job, the relationship, the crowd of friends or keep doing the same weekend activities. On top of that, our culture has a strong bias towards grit and not giving up. And, of course, we are much more fearful of losing what we have than gaining something else. So, we end up in a local optimum that is far from what we could have accomplished. But to get there, we will have to first give up things to create the opportunity to move towards a better place. So, do you know when to quit?
