I recently told one of my sons the story of how my grandfather taught my father how to handle horses. By the time my dad had become an adult, the horse had been replaced with an engine. My dad taught me to calculate in my head, as this was a skill that he needed a lot in his early career. By the time I became an adult, calculators were all around and my skill was irrelevant. My youngest son does not like to read books and asked me why he couldn’t simply watch a YouTube video on the topic. My initial reaction was that reading books is a critical skill, but then I was reminded of my grandfather and dad. Maybe the ability to read books and enjoy it is an outdated skill? I have seen many examples of people who feel that their skills are critically important to the company or society at large. However, simply being good at something doesn’t make it relevant. So, ask yourself the question today: which of my skills are outdated or on the way to become outdated? And what new skills am I going to acquire to stay relevant?
