One of the main differences that I noticed having worked on both sides of the pond is that in the US, when there is a big change announced in a company that is not received positively by all, people either disagree and commit or they leave. In Europe, in many companies this leads to people entering the passive aggressive stage of trying to sabotage the change that leaders are trying to implement. Although this is terrible for companies, it is even worse for the individuals involved. You enter a space where you’re still receiving a paycheck, but you are wasting your time and life energy in a situation that you don’t believe in and that you’re either passively or actively resisting. What a waste! So, if you are confronted with a big change that you’re not necessarily buying into, make an explicit and intentional decision: disagree and commit. Or move on to something else that you do believe in!
