The terms manager as well as leader are highly overloaded with lots of definitions around. However, to me there is a fundamental difference. A manager will tell people how to do their job and then spends his or her time checking that people follow the defined process. A leader tells the team what the outcomes are that we’re looking to accomplish and then lets each individual figure out the best way to achieve those outcomes. When Henry T. Ford started his assembly line, every movement of every person on the line was measured with a stopwatch and people had to move like marionettes as everything they did was tracked and measured. If that is what you’re looking for, you need managers. In the age of AI, everything that is repetitive, can be measured and has been described in a process is or soon will be automated by an AI agent. That means we need more leaders and fewer managers. So, reflect on how you work with your team and decide whether you are a manager or a leader.
