One of the largest unanswered questions that nobody dares to touch with a 10 foot pole is the topic of consciousness. In philosophy, every PhD student is advised against that topic as it is where incredibly smart and talented people have gone and failed to contribute with anything useful. In computer science, we have long relied on the Turing test as a tool to determine whether a computer program would be conscious. ChatGPT managed that challenge during recent years, but nobody considers it conscious. There are voices that claim that robots and AI agents should get the same rights as humans as they are becoming conscious. However, we don’t even have an agreed upon definition. We can’t measure it. We can barely talk about it without getting stuck! I find it fascinating how one of the most important questions in the world keeps getting ignored as we don’t know how to address it.
