We are occasionally asked to take on actions and do things that maybe don’t feel entirely comfortable. Something where your gut tells you that it’s not right, but peer pressure is pushing you to do it anyway. There is a book titled “Ordinary Men” that tells the story of how, during the second world war, a group of perfectly normal German men were sent to the east front as a police force. Over the next few years, these people developed into atrocious monsters that killed innocent men, women and children and committed the most horrific acts. These men got to that point one small step off the righteous path at the time. Of course, we live in a different world, but I still meet people who act unethically, but who found ways to justify it to themselves. The best way to avoid even taking the first steps in the wrong direction for me is to ask myself whether I am proud of the person that I see in the mirror. Am I living up to the standards that I set for myself? Who do you see when you look in the mirror? Are you proud?
