Accelerating the adoption of digital — software, data and AI — technologies in industry and society.
reflection

This time it’s different? Really?

Recently Deepseek R1 came out and it disrupted the tech industry and stock market as the AI solutions that we thought required ridiculously large investments in model size and associated infrastructure were possible to run on your laptop. The interesting observation is that if there is one aspect that defines the last 50 years of computing, it’s that expensive solutions rapidly decrease in price. Everyone is aware of Moore’s law but there are several technologies, such as storage, that have gone down in price even faster. This time many claimed that this time it’s different: AI is a different beast that won’t abide by the same rules. Until, of course, it does. We see this all the time in the stockmarket with bubbles that then deflate. And every time, many are as surprised as the last time. History does not repeat itself, but it rhymes. So, next time someone claims that this time it’s different, ask yourself where this is really the case.
