There is a fun study where people are shown human faces and have to rank those as friendly or threatening. Over time, the researchers show fewer threatening faces until only friendly ones remain. Interestingly, people keep labeling the same ratio of, now only friendly, faces as threatening because we think in relative terms and not in absolute ones. The same is true in our lives in general: the fewer dangerous and stressful things happen and the more in control we feel, the more sensitive we become to even the smallest issues. I notice it myself that in my comfortable professor life, I can get upset about things that would hardly register and I would take in stride when I worked in industry. Until something really bad happens, like someone close passing away, that puts everything in perspective again. So, I often ask myself the question: am I resilient? Are you?
