So, you prefer natural?

As a western culture, we seem to prefer anything “natural” and many commercials use it as a term. We prefer ecological vegetables, even though they take more land to grow. We prefer green electricity, even if wind power kills numerous birds and insects and solar power causes many countries to maintain dirty coal power plants for when the sun does not shine. I am not against these things, but we have to think about the negatives of our choices. Try cooking over wood fire instead of the stove in your kitchen. Read a book by a candle instead of your LED lights. Wash yourself in a stream instead of your warm shower. Go outside in the rain with a wax coat instead of your Goretex jacket. Or try to go for a full day barefoot instead of wearing shoes. All these are more natural, but clearly inferior to what we have available today. It is easy to believe that “natural” is beautiful, peaceful and how God intended it. However, to quote Thomas Hobbes, life in the state of nature is solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short. If you prefer natural, reflect on what you really are choosing and what the negatives are.
