One of the traps I fell in early in my life was the busyness trap. It felt good to be busy and our culture rewards busyness. When knowledge work was taking over the workplace, managers did not have a good way to measure productivity so the pseudo KPI that people increasingly looked for was how busy employees seem to be. And then, there are meetings. Lots of them and I have seen many people brag about how many parallel meetings they have and how they divide their time between these different meetings. The problem that I ran into was that being busy felt good in the moment, but when looking back on a month, quarter or year, I was always disappointed with what I actually accomplished. Now that I have more freedom and control over my time, I have removed a lot of activities from my life so that I can focus on the few that, in my view, have the highest impact. In the end, it’s about creating results that you feel are the best use of the limited time we have on this planet. So, if you are busy, perhaps you are running away from something more important. What could that be?
