Whenever I ask that question to someone, the immediate response I get is that the individual is in charge of him or herself. When observing myself as well as other people, though, it rapidly becomes clear that we are influenced and to some extent controlled by other factors. Our job, manager, teacher, spouse, parent, child or any other person in our lives often can exert quite a bit of control over how we act and behave, even if we do not want to do so. Even more powerful are the things happening in our own heads. The habits that we built up over the years but that no longer are helpful. The traumas that trigger fears and behaviors that we know don’t help us. The instinctual patterns born out of generations of evolution. In many ways, the challenge of humans is to become cognizant of what controls us, rid ourselves of that influence and to increasingly become in charge of ourselves and our lives. So, reflect on this: who is in charge of you?
