Especially among younger people, occasionally the floppy disk is brought up. Of course, many know the 3.5 inch one, but the 5 ¼ inch was used for a long time as well. The floppy disk is often treated as a joke and a poor example of how to store data. And in today’s viewpoint, that is entirely correct. The interesting thing is however that nobody seems to think that a few decades from now, people will talk in the same way about today’s technology. The USB sticks. The poorly organized and at times insecure cloud storage solutions. The way in which data ownership and usage is often poorly managed. The lack of multi-sensory interfaces and, even worse, the lack of direct brain interfaces. We have a tendency to make fun of people, technologies and society in the past without realizing that we are going to be in the same place a few years from now. Rather than focusing on the specific technology, product or behavioral pattern, I believe it behooves us to focus on the patterns that are constant. What is it that did not change over the years, decades and centuries? Rationally, we all know that genetically we are not different from our cave-dwelling ancestors 10.000 years ago. But we have difficulty accepting that the instinctive behaviors that kept our ancestors alive still control a lot of our behavior, even if it often is counterproductive in today’s world. So, as my challenge to you today, what do you do today that people will make fun of a few decades from now? And does it help you to take your life a bit less serious?
