One day, it was the last time

When I ran San Francisco marathon (a long time ago), there was a group of older runners wearing t-shirts that said on the front “one day I will no longer be able to do this” and on the back it said “today is not that day”. The idea was to motivate themselves and the others that they were going to finish this marathon, come hell or high water, as the saying goes. However, the fact remains that for everything we do, there will be a time when you will have done that thing for the last time. It doesn’t mean that you die, but it can be a child moving out of the house or moving to another country. The Buddhists have a term “Annica” which means impermanence. The idea is that everything that exists is impermanent. We are. Our children are. The house we live in is. Even our planet and our solar system are. However, we tend to treat everything as if it is going to last forever. And consequently we often do not value the people, relationships and experiences around us to the extent they deserve. Because we implicitly believe that everything is going to be there next time we look for it. So, as a reflection today: remember that everything is temporary and that we will have to say goodbye to everything we know and own at some point. How does that affect your behavior?
