David Allen, the author of the book Getting Things Done, frequently says that you can have anything in life, but not everything in life. Although I rationally recognize the truth in the statement, I am one of those maximizers who hates giving up on options and choosing one thing with the implicit understanding that I will not get the other things. The risk that I then struggle with is that I am more bothered by what I didn’t get than what I enjoy what I did. Another aspect is that I have a tendency to commit to many different things, rather than focusing all my energy on one or a very small number of things. The consequence is several small results, but an absence of “knocking the ball out of the park” results. In many ways, I feel it is my implicit tactic to minimize risk. Putting all eggs in one basket and then dropping it causes me to end up emptyhanded, but dividing my energy over many baskets will at least bring some eggs to the market. Still, the challenge I am working on is to place bigger bets, focus my energy more so that I can have bigger “wins”. So, as a reflection for today, what is the thing that you want out of life the most and are you putting all your energy towards that or are you hedging?
