The primary difference I have experienced between traditional European product companies and the newer SaaS companies is where they focus their energy. Traditional product companies focus on the process before the start of production (SoP). SaaS companies focus their energy on the phase post delivery. It is then that you can get a learning loop going with the market, your customers and your systems deployed in the field. Up to the point that you are in market, all you’re doing is guessing what customers might appreciate. After that, you can start measuring and make data-driven decisions. Also, once you have a learning loop going, you can often grow the business as you are delivering more value than any other player as you have quantitative data to back up your decisions. In most digital industries, a player that gets its learning loop first and manages to scale is virtually impossible to catch by competitors. So, as a reflection for today: where is your learning loop and are you using it to the best of your abilities?
