Being the social animals that we are, we spend vast amounts of our lives behaving in ways that we believe lead to positive outcomes in the context in which we find ourselves. We look busy and motivated to our boss to make sure he feels we are putting in the work. We buy products to impress our neighbors and friends, rather than us caring about it ourselves. In the gym, we push hard, make funny noises and look sweaty to show to the others that we are putting in the effort. We compete in completely meaningless competitions just to “show them who’s boss”. To paraphrase Fight Club, we work in jobs we don’t like to earn money to spend on things we don’t want to impress people we don’t like. This can so easily lead to a situation where you spend all your energy on looking good to others that you no longer know what you yourself actually want. So, the question becomes, what would you do when you know nobody is watching? What would you still spend time on even if there would be nobody to admire the result. What are the things you do that you only do for intrinsic reasons of meaning and joy? So, my challenge to you is to plan some time this week just by yourself to spend on something that is completely irrelevant to anyone but you. Revel in the joy of it and find out where in your life you need more of that!
