One of my managers, a long time ago, often reminded me and the rest of his team that activity, being busy, is not the same as progress. I notice this in my own professional life. As I wrote about earlier, I am as much of a dopamine addict as the next person and simply ticking the box on a completed action item gives me a little kick that makes me feel good. In that sense, a full agenda and lots of things to do feels good, up to a point, as every meeting, action item and task completed gives the little kick that we need to maintain the dopamine level in our brain. There are also things like scrolling YouTube shorts or something similar that have the same effect and cause you to pass the time without actually getting anything done. Of course, what we are looking for is progress, not just activity. For that we need to know what progress looks like and what the necessary next steps are. And then execute on these instead of mindlessly keeping busy. So, as a reflection for today, are you making progress or are you simply busy spinning your wheels?
