There is this beautiful story by Jocko Willink about his time as a Seal commander. Whenever one of his people came to him with a problem, he would proclaim “Good!”. The reason for this was threefold. First, rather than getting into victim mode, this caused everyone to step up and focus on addressing the less than optimal situation. Second, he viewed it as an opportunity for people to show their resilience and adaptability and treat it as a learing opportunity. Third, as a leader, one of the key roles to play is to be undisturbed by problems and this showed him as leaning into the problem rather than shying away from it. None of us reading (or writing) this are Seal commanders, I assume, but I still think we can embrace the same principles. Rather than bemoaning situations that we didn’t expect, we can lean into the problem and proactively and positively meet the challenge and make the best of it. This goes one step beyond the Swedish “gilla läget” in my view as it isn’t just about accepting, but also positively addressing things. So, as my challenge today: what did not go as planned in your life? And how can you make that a good thing?
