One of the results of many generations of humanoids living in scarcity, we have built a scarcity mindset. One where either I get something or you get something, but we can’t both have it. We see this in all kinds of contexts. At work, we struggle to get promoted and feel upset if a colleague is selected before us because we view it as a zero-sum game. In the dating scene, if your friend gets the girl, you feel like a loser because you didn’t get her. In competitions, there is a winner and then everyone who didn’t win. Our entire society is organized around win-lose, zero sum games. The surprising thing is that almost anything that matters in life is win-win and non-zero-sum games. When a startup succeeds, it actually creates value that is added to the economy. It created new value and didn’t take value away from someone else. Although we live in an anti-globalist society right now, international trade has been a net positive for virtually everyone involved because of the increased efficiencies. Rather than living in scarcity, we now live in a world of abundance but thousands of years of genetic and memetic selection work against us. So, as a reflection for today: where are you acting out of a scarcity mindset where you really should use an abundance mindset?
