As someone who has ridden motorcycles since the 1980s, there have been some motorcycles that I always admired. One of these is the original Yamaha XT500. A simple, one cylinder workhorse of a motorcycle that worked equally well offroad as it did on the road. Color me surprised when Yamaha announced a new version of the XT500 this year that is a retro of the original one. And not only Yamaha, but also Kawasaki came out with a retro inspired version of their famous Z650 model from the same period. And it doesn’t stop there! Polaroid cameras are back. Vinyl record players. Casio digital watches. Tamagochis. And so on. Although I am the first to give people their freedom to explore what they find fun, I am afraid that part of the reason is that many feel that things were better before. That our current times suck and that things are only getting worse. Although I can list many things that I worry about today, I am fully aware of all the progress that we have made since the 1970s and 80s. Anyone who wants the Cold War back? Or the AIDS epidemic? My concern is that when we start to look back, we stop looking forward and working to improve things even further. So, as my challenge to you today is look forward, not backward!
