There is an older woman in the gym that I frequent who disappeared for a while. It turns out she had an operation and was now back and hellbent on regaining the strength and fitness she had lost while she was away. During the year where I struggled with recovering from an achilles injury, I lost a significant amount of speed while running because of my VO2Max dropping like a brick. Now I am struggling (hard) to get back to the same fitness level that I had before the injury. Of course, the same is true for our mental state. We may be quite grounded and stable when something throws us off. This can be a relationship issue, illness of a loved one or something at work that causes us to break our habits, lose our grounding and cause a lot of stress. We then need to work on regaining our mental grounding. The risk is that we fall into victim mode where we accept a far from optimal situation even if we are able to change it. We need to, in the words of Michael Easter, embrace short-term discomfort to find long term benefit. So, as something to reflect on today, what have you accepted that you should really address and change?
