In this book “The denial of death”, Ernest Becker claims that many of us seek a form of symbolic immortality by engaging in projects and activities that will continue to exist after one's death. There is a saying that all humans die twice. First, when one’s physical body dies. Second, when the last person that remembers them and their work passes away. Initially, I thought it was a bit grandiose to try to have an impact beyond your own lifespan. But reflecting on the many people living nihilistic, hedonistic lives and who contribute very little to humankind, I believe that it’s better to put your life in service of something that you really believe in and want to contribute to. Of course, we don’t start there. As Terry Gou (founder of Foxconn) says, life can be viewed as consisting of three phases. In the first phase, you become as proficient in your chosen discipline and profession as you can. In the second phase, you work hard to garner as much career progression, material success and achievements. Then, in the third phase, you focus on legacy and giving back to society. That is where your immortality project comes in. So, as my challenge to you today: what is your immortality project?
