Are you building endurance?

Over the last two years or so, I have picked up endurance sports again, mostly running, swimming and biking. The interesting thing is that the best way to get good at something is to do it. So, if you want to run far, the only solution is to train by going for long runs. Also in the pool I have been extending the distance I swim in training as, in my view, the only way to build endurance is by doing the work. When out on the interwebs, it is clear that everyone is looking for shortcuts and ways to avoid to do the work. The problem is that talking about the work is not doing the work. Planning the work is not doing the work. Talking to your friends about the work is not doing the work. Dreaming on the couch about doing the work is not doing the work. Buying the gear you need for doing the work is not doing the work. Going to bed early to do the work the next day is not doing the work. The only way to do the work is to do the work. There is a beautiful story about, I think, Stephen King, visiting the literature program at a university and being asked by students how to become such a successful writer as he is. His response: the secret to a successful writer is the application of one’s behind to the chair. Meaning that in order to be a writer, you have to write. A lot. All the time. So, as a reflection for today: What do you desire to become good or even better at? And are you putting in the work to build the endurance you need?
