Aether! At the beginning of the 20th century, scientists were looking to explain how light moves through space. Clearly, sunlight is hitting us from millions of kilometers away, so we know it works. Just not how and the belief was that a medium was required to allow light to travel through. Scientists came up with “aether” that would act similar to air for sound. Many articles were written about the properties of aether and experiments were run to measure it and establish its existence. Until we came up with a better explanation: light is both a wave and a particle and travels perfectly fine through a vacuum. As humans, we are storytelling machines and we create stories continuously to explain the world around us and to predict what is going to happen. That is all fine and dandy, but at some point we need to ensure that the stories we create are actually accurate. For that we need data that proves our point. So, what stories are you telling yourself today and where is the data?
