Yesterday I listened to a podcast where Jocko Willink was interviewed. One example that he used in the conversation was that if you find yourself in the forest and have no idea where you are or where to go, most people have a tendency to hesitate. To stop, wait and reflect. His point is that this is exactly the opposite of what you need to do. Whenever you feel yourself hesitating, you start moving. In any direction. It doesn’t matter which direction because even finding out after a while that you’re going in the wrong direction is information you didn’t have before. I notice this a lot in the companies that I work with. There is a lot of economic uncertainty due to the trade war between the US and China, the tariffs, the role AI may play and the general economic and societal uncertainty. It causes people to stop and tread water for a while as they hope that things will calm down and it becomes clear how to move forward. If you want to have impact and move things forward for your company, yourself and even society as a whole, that is exactly the opposite of what you should do. You need to take action based on the limited information that you have. So, as a challenge for today: where in your life are you treading water and waiting for clarity? What action can you take to move things forward?
