This week I had a chat with a recruiter (it happens sometimes and never goes anywhere as I am a spoiled brat). The fun part of the discussion was where he tried to pigeonhole me in a specific box in terms of my work and research. It turns out that the way I work as a professor is quite eclectic and broad and it’s hard to classify me into one type. In addition to that, I am also a research center director, angel investor and board member. And outside of work, I am a husband, father, cat owner, gym instructor, marathon runner, gym rat, and so on. As humans, we always try to put the people we meet in a box. We classify them and describe them as a school teacher, a car mechanic, a personal trainer, a manager and so on. Interestingly, AI does the same. It is trained on vast amounts of data and then tries to classify you into one of the boxes that it learned during its training. In our upbringing and education, we are trained to conform, to fit in these boxes and to not stick out in any way. But in the age of AI, I think we need to do the opposite. We need to be unclassifiable and, as a consequence, we need to be weird. AI focuses on classification and prediction based on that, so as humans we need to be weird, unpredictable and creative. So, as my challenge to you today: in what way are you weird? And how can you become even more so?
